Ask Kytka Archives: January 4, 2003

“My daughter is nearly three and while she has scribbled a bit in the past, shows no true interest in it. I’ve tried all types of crayons in all types of settings, even covering my coffee table with white paper thinking a big flat surface would be appealing. Nothing. She seems otherwise pretty happy, curious, affectionate and well-adjusted, likes books, outdoor play, play dough and finger painting. But will not deal with crayons. What’s this about and should I be worried?”

I wouldn’t worry at all. Your daughter sounds like a wonderful little girl. All children eventually find their own path to drawing. My children tend to want to hold crayons before they can even walk but for example, my sisters girls (both) who are each only about 1-3 months different in age from mine have very little interest. My 5 year old draws like a 10 year old and my sister often would stress out that her kids never draw and when they do it is horrible scribbles in dark colors…. She worried so much that she bought them children’s how to draw books, etc… and nothing until just a few weeks ago.

Apparently they began to show a slight interest and when they finally

You know when someone is positive and optimistic.

Generally they are interested and interesting, adventurous, braver than others to try new things and curious about lots of things. They are usually not bored; they have so much that they want to find out about and do.

Optimistic and positive people are also more likely to be thankful for what they have, and show genuine gratitude to others.

Little children are like this, but somehow, sometimes, it begins to change.

Let’s encourage them to stay optimistic.

As parents, we all do the best we know.
We do a great job; we love our kids, and have fun as a family.

But sometimes it just takes someone else discussing an idea, or a note in an article, or perhaps even one of these lessons, to set us on a path we hadn’t thought about before, and we can add to our skills and ‘parent tools’.

In this lesson, ‘Encouraging Optimism and Positive Attitudes’, as with all of the previous lessons, you build on your skills over time, and at the same time you help to develop your child’s skills and ability to cope with his world beautifully.

A lot of your progress with him comes from bringing yourself to a much greater awareness of your language.

If your words and communications with him are focused on the positive rather than the negative, this begins to be the way to think and act at your place for all the family.

Once again it’s in the little things that make the difference.

For example, instead of “Don’t do xxxxx” we can say “Have you thought of doing xxxxx”, or perhaps “Would you like to do xxxxx”. (Then when you really need to shout ‘Don’t’ in a dangerous situation say, he will jump to action).

When children are whining and complaining, instead of talking about that issue, you can change the subject and just ignore the negative talk (especially for younger children – talk about something they are really interested in), or for older children, find something positive about the issue he is talking about, in other words, turn it around.

It’s a scientific fact that when you raise the level of endorphins in the body you feel happier and more positive.

Activate those little fellers with exercise and laughter.

As you start to bring your focus to using positive language with your child, you will start thinking of even more little actions that will guide him to be a more positive person..

Here are some fun starters/reminders:

Little Actions on a Daily Basis

After school, instead of asking “How was school today?” ask about the most interesting thing he learnt, or the funniest thing that happened, or the best game he played.

Laugh a lot. Laughter is the BEST creator of endorphins, and boosts a feeling of optimism

Play a Game of Five Senses – in the car, or as you are sitting around the table; it just takes a few minutes. Take it in turns for each member of the family to say what they see, hear, smell, taste and feel/touch. Have a laugh too.

Observe good things he does and says and comment what you like about that

As you tuck him into bed ask him to tell you about the three best things that happened today – focusing his mind on the positive

Keep TV watching to a set minimum each day. Set some rules for him here. Remove exposure to those negative stories from his life

Always follow through with what you say you will do. If he is continually ‘let down’ he begins to give up; he doesn’t trust that things work out for him; pessimism about his world creeps in
Be grateful yourself for the good things, and teach him to observe the lovely things that happen in his life each day

Show him that when you give a smile, you get a smile (raise his endorphins) and improve his good feelings

You are the role model. If you are optimistic and look forward to life’s events with excitement, you child is more likely to be the same.

Here are some things to think about

Awareness of the language we use (positive rather than the negative)

Appropriate information for children to know (world issues like war and famine; frightening events like murder, robbery and attacks on people are not subjects for children to hear about; they become fearful)

Learning to notice positive things

Be watchful for changes. Does you child show sadness lately that wasn’t there before. Find out what is going on – now

Health and nutrition (Yes again – good food, and adequate sleep are crucial)

Being a role model (talk more about the good things happening in your life)

Be aware of the danger of expecting perfection (ALWAYS expecting children to be 100% positive). This can actually set them up to fail

Smiling. When you give a smile, you get one back

Learning to look forward to events with excitement and anticipation

This treasury comes from an earlier time. A time before television, video games, shopping malls and other frivolous demands for your child’s attention. A time when young and old gathered around the family table on a rainy day to create their own fun, and enjoy each other’s company.

One part education, one part showmanship, “Magical Experiments” is far more than just another collection of easy science projects for kids. It’s a deeply memorable set of educational activities that will keep your children engaged and entertained for hours at a time, and exercise their imagination and resourcefulness for years to come.

As you look through the pages of “Magical Experiments”, your child will discover how to…
Force a banana to peel itself and discover how pressure changes in a gas at different temperatures…

Make a rolling top move uphill – this one will amaze and entertain kids for hours, and help them discover important principles of energy and motion…

Propel a paper fish across a tub of water using nothing more than a drop of oil – a perfect activity for small kids to show them how different fluids behave when mixed together…

Float a sewing needle on water, and then turn it into the world’s simplest compass – learning the principles of surface tension, magnetism, and geography with one simple activity…

Cut through a thread hanging inside a bottle—without laying a finger on it…

Persuade a coin jump out of a glass… using only the gentle power of your breath…

Build your own tiny acrobatic show using a horseshoe magnet and sewing needles… even the youngest children enjoy this one…

Create a hydraulic merry-go-round out of nuts and a couple of straws…

Use the principles of motion and static mechanics to balance a needle on the tip of a pin…

Create hand-shadow figures, ideal for dark, stormy nights at home, or perhaps for camping trips…

Learn an important principle of elementary mathematics using a handful of dominoes, and learn draw circles and ovals with an improvised compass…

And dozens more…

And more than just getting a good grade on their science project, your children will also discover how to…

Build Resourcefulness and Creativity. Every “Magical Experiment” uses materials you can find around your home, and shows your children to assemble them in creative and unexpected ways. Try even a few of these experiments and a child will begin to develop a sense of inventiveness and creativity that no ready-made build-by-numbers kit can ever provide.

Create Their Own Fun. In “Magical Experiments“, your kids will discover activities that keep them amused and intrigued for hours. They’ll learn a little science, of course, but they’ll also get to enjoy an amazing series of activities that are perfect for hours of memorable family fun. They’ll especially enjoy putting together their own entertaining games and “magic shows”. You’ll never hear… “Mom, Dad… I’m bored” ever again!

Exercise Their Imaginative Abilities. Make a microscope out of a drop of water. Create your fun family games out of a plate and a piece of paper. Build your own kitchen scale from string and spoons. When your children try these “Magical Experiments”, they’ll develop a burning desire to find out why things work, and a deep love and fascination with the natural world.

Develop a Love of Learning. Making learning science fun and your child won’t resist learning new things. They’ll retain new understanding longer, and hungrily begin to seek out knowledge all by themselves.

And most importantly, as you do these projects together, your children will spend many happy moments with you. As you know, children grow up far too fast. So now is the time to develop a deep and lasting bond with them, and to create…

Memories That Last A Lifetime!

Kytka’s Reviews: Spiritual Syllabus & Golden Beetle Books: Geneii of Language

Geneii of Language (was curriculum/math stories)

From the Prologue, “The miracle of words calls on the ego forces of the writer, speaker/listener, and reader – it calls on the Self. The potential in children for self-expression is enhanced by a comprehensive, consistent, and creative language education – this small manual is directed to these high ends.”

Like most of the Golden Beetles, the Geneii of Language is a small booklet, about 90 pages and about 5″ x 7′. It focuses on the language arts main lessons and middle lessons for the first and second grades.

For 1st, the Mains are The Capital Alphabet, Writing of Nature, Letter Combinations, and the Middles are Foreign Language, Story Speech & News, Letter Structure and Spacing

For Second, the Mains are Lower Case Alphabet, 12 Word Families, Reading and Library. and the Middles are Word Games and Lower Case Writing Practice. (The Drama lesson is in a separate drama book.)

Each section gives you an essay on what the general ideas are behind each main lesson, and usually one or more sample lesson ideas is broadly presented to get you started. The rest is up to you to create. Every once in a while you’ll find a complete lesson plan (as in his grade one music book) but usually not. He is chock full of really great ideas that you can then adapt for your own child, but you have to do lots of creating. If that is what you’re wanting to do, then Golden Beetle might be what you’re looking for.

Often, the information is presented in a story or a wacky narrative. Whitehead is an excellent writer. To me, this sort of helps to pull me into the creative brain mood I have to be in to write lessons. Lots of other people either like the style or hate it–sort of like Monty Python or Kurt Vonnegut. He also believe strongly in embracing the home culture, so Australian culture runs deep throughout, thus inspiring me to bring in our unique culture.

These books also completely embrace Waldorf ideas and thus attribute different lessons to different body forces: the language stream of main lessons is a “head” stream; where the middle lessons are really a literary “chest” stream–thus the emphasis on speaking and doing. It sounds odd at first, but then it really helps to remind yourself what type of lesson you are teaching and where the child should be taking this information in. The different streams combine to awaken the child to language holistically.

I can’t really do the book justice other than to put in another quote (from The Writing of the Bush-writing of nature main lesson), “Now let me see, the essence of a language of Nature main lesson is to expand the child’s horizon to realize that language is indeed a universal principle. A bird inscribes a message in the air with its flight pattern; a koala leaves tell-tale scratches in the bark of a smooth gum tree; a tiny pile of sawdust tells of a witchetty grub inside a stump; ants hurrying their eggs to the penthouse indicate heavy rain on the way. Nature is, as a first principle, language.” – Alan Whitehead

Alan Whitehead of Spiritual Syllabus & Golden Beetle Books Speaks on Mains, Blocks and Middle Lessons

QUESTION: I just recently purchase 3 of Alan Whitehead’s SSS: Genii of Lanugage & Numeria (both for class 1&2) and A Steiner Homeschool? My question is this, Mr. Whitehead speaks of 3 lesson streams: mains, middles & blocks. I think most of us are familiar with the idea of a “main lesson” that lasts 3-5 weeks. It seems that at our local schools, other ongoing subjects are then organized for the late morning & afternoon hours (handwork, music, eurthymy, games, etc.) But Mr. Whitehead’s book seems to organize all the other subjects into the ‘middle’ or ‘block’ lesson (late a.m. and afternoon); and they rotate in their emphasis (such as numeracy, literacy, etc.) similarly to the main lessons. Do you know where I can get more info on this method? Is this method specific to Australia? Any feedback on pros/cons of organizing lessons in this manner?

ANSWER: Rudolf Steiner originally intended the sequential ‘main lesson’ system, as opposed to ‘period’ teaching, for all lessons morning, middle and afternoon. Alas, bureaucratic demands, like being forced to have one or two periods each week of things like languages, religion, gym and so on, prevented this. In fact he was lucky to be able to

The Spiritual Syllabus Series is by far the most comprehensive catalogue of the Rudolf Steiner teaching program ever produced. There are approximately 50 teaching units detailed in each year – each usually taught in the 3-week ‘block’ system (as opposed to ‘period’ teaching) of from 23 to 30 hours. For instance, in the Class 3 and 4 Language book below, Logios, the ’12 Points of Punctuation’ refers to a whole 30-hour unit, as does every other annotation. The books cover the four main academic strands of modern schooling. In the spirit of balance, so important in Steiner Education; these are Language; Maths; Social Studies; Science there are 24 books, 6 in each of 4 subject streams. These provide a full Steiner academic curriculum from Class 1 to 12.

Plus TWENTY SIX OTHER TITLES by Golden Beetle Books including A Steiner Homeschool, books by Susan Whitehead – Little Story and Picture handbooks for the Under-7′s, and General Educational titles.

ABOUT ALAN WHITEHEAD

ALAN WHITEHEAD has enjoyed a career in Steiner Education for over three decades. He received his teacher-education at

GLENAEON SCHOOL under the tutelage of Miss Sylvia Brose. There he was privileged, in 1967, to be one of the founding teachers of Australia’s first Steiner High School, where he was a Class Guardian and Specialist Art Teacher. He was also a principal founder, and pioneer teacher (of both the Primary and High Schools) at Australia’s second Steiner school, LORIEN NOVALIS, in Dural, Sydney. He was Chairman of the school from its 1971 inception, until he left in 1985. As well, he founded, and was the Director of, the first full-time Steiner teacher-training facility in Australia, the LORIEN NOVALIS COLLEGE OF TEACHER EDUCATION. He was Convenor of RUDOLF STEINER SCHOOLS OF AUSTRALIA – AN ASSOCIATION, the current national body of Steiner Education, framing the initial policies and principles. He now works with his wife Susan (Under-7s and Life Movement- Eurythmy) as an author, social commentator and consultant on Spiritual Science in general, and Rudolf Steiner Education in particular.

ABOUT SUSAN WHITEHEAD

SUSAN WHITEHEAD has over three decades experience in the luminous world of small children. As well as having a husband and two children, she entered a world of teaching and training at DALCROSS/GLENAEON STEINER SCHOOL at Pymble in 1968. In 1971 she was a co-founder of LORIEN NOVALIS SCHOOL for Rudolf Steiner Education in Dural, Sydney. She was a director of the school for nearly fifteen years and held other positions, including Primary Co-ordinator. Susan both established and was Director and Guardian of the Children’s Garden (Kindergarten) at Lorien Novalis. In this homely environment she pioneered the creation of songs, stories and poems in the world of her Under-7s, telling tales relevant to Australia and The Spirit of the Times. She assisted in the creation of the LORIEN NOVALIS TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAM, establishing courses for Story Content (their telling and creation), Kindergarten and Child Development. She was also the convenor of the school’s Adult Evening Courses. Always her love of the arts went alongside her day-to-day tasks, and she was particularly active in painting, speech and especially the Art of Life Movement (Eurythmy) all of which she considers a necessity to enhance her work with small children and as an essential element in the student teacher program. From 1986 she has carried forward the creative impulse in teacher education and Parental Imaginative Care of Under-7s. All this she is presently engaged in, as well as writing, consulting and conducting courses in The Art Of Life Movement both in Australia and Overseas.

Parents Reviews:

We loved Coco and Lono! We did an entire lesson block on it and you could easily do much more than that. I think we may revisit it each fall as there are so many activity ideas in it I can see how my kids would love to grow with it. I don’t have the winter one but I am thinking about buying the Spring one. The only thing that caught me off guard when I got it was the size, it’s tiny, but PACKED with the story, songs, and activities. ~Melisa

I strongly encourage you to visit their website and to purchase and collect as many of their products as you can! Reading their materials is better than attending a conference or a workshop because you can read at your leisure time and time again!

Touch the Earth Gently: Games & Sport Class 1 – 12, Dance Class 1 – 7
This is a wonderful 112 page book which is truly a treasure trove of information, inspiration and lesson ideas & plans. The content include headings such as: The Class Trip, Family Fun, Play, Games & Sport, Primary Games, Water Games, Facilities, Ball Games, 7 Movement Children, Gymnastics, 4 Temperaments, Bush Games, Field Games, Indoor Games, Equipment Games, High School Sport, Sport Physiology, SCUBA Diving, Martial Arts, Sport’s a Joke!, Fishing, Clean-up Australia, Hunting, Dancing, Steiner as Sportsperson, and a complete Class 1- 7 outline for a Dance curriculum. (Which for those of us who are home schooling, provides a wonderful alternative to Eurythmy!). Like all of the Whitehead’s books, the book is literally overflowing with information. The resources are so vast, it’s truly difficult to write a review as the scope of what is covered on these pages is so immense. However, please don’t take that to mean that each subject is touched upon briefly – rather it seems that they have found a way to condense information to make it both understandable to the reader and yet vast in it’s scope of where it can go… Filled with black and white and color photographs, as well as illustrations, drawings and a few comic strips – this book is the best manual I have found to date on Movement and Dance in a Waldorf Curriculum. I highly recommend it for EVERY home school.
